How Language United Rwanda After the Genocide

Beauty, pretty, women, beautiful women are just some of the very few words associated with a not so big country on the continent of Africa; Rwanda.
Rwanda is quite popular for a country its size, it is quite a small country with a population of about 11 million people and at 22,338 square kilometers size can be equated to the size of the state of Maryland in the United States of America.

People all over the world sing the praises about how beautiful the women from Rwanda are, especially those who have had a chance to visit this country that is found in the Eastern part of Africa.

Features Associated With Women From Rwanda

The physical features of the women in Rwanda are majorly characterized of small faces, long necks, small upper bodies and wide bottoms and not forgetting the fair complexion.

They have a calmness about them especially during conversations that attracts many foreigners. Yes even the women who visit Rwanda will testify to this very calm demeanour.

Speaking of conversations, people in Rwanda used to majorly use Kinyarwanda and French for this. Though later the English language was included on to their official language list therefore, most of them especially from the older generation are struggling to adapt to English.

Language role in uniting the people after the Rwanda genocide.

Apart from the beautiful women, Rwanda was pushed into the lime light by the unfortunate 1994 genocide that saw an estimated number of about 800,000 people being massacred and brutally killed with Machetes, clubs, stones and any other thing capable of body mutilation and death in as few days as 100.

This came as the Hutu ethnicity tried to wipe out those of the Tutsi minority ethnicity. This was an ugly 100 days in the history of Rwanda however, time with its magical powers started to heal the country and its people as a whole.

The language factor must have been very important in the establishing of peace in the then so devastated country because as much as the Hutu and Tutsis thought they were different, they all spoke the same language and it stood out as the common factor in this trying era.

Kinyarwanda is the main language spoken in Rwanda and is a mother tongue to both the Hutu and Tutsi ethnicity. Though there are other languages as a result of influences from the bordering countries and the former colonial masters.

Languages Spoken In Rwanda Are;

  • Kinyarwanda
  • French
  • English
  • Swahili

Therefore communication is a very important aspect in life generally and once it is tampered with, atrocities like the Rwanda genocide break out. Therefore language is vital to communication and everything possible to make it understandable should be done. This could be translation, interpretation, sign language interpretation and much more.
